MMS WIN
Material Management System for Windows

This screen from MMS WIN 4.0 illustrates a pop-up memo, one of many features that eliminates extra paperwork while offering a more organized method of detailing actions taken on individual items.

CONCEPTS BEHIND MMS WIN

While combining the best technology with NAVSEA policy and procedure, MMS WIN developers emphasized these concepts:

DEN Compatibility - Essential for Navy data management and information transfer.

Standardized Input and Output - Fully compatible with existing systems for maximum data-base transportability -- the key to serving multiple users.

End-user participation - Addresses differing concerns between various user levels and policy personnel, thus incorporating end user comments into NAVSEA requirements

Modular Programming - Allows flexible application of MMS WIN's material management and procurement modules based on user requirements and resources or need for gradual adaptation from manual to automated processes.

Paperless Information Environment - Electronic file transfer techniques assist in MMS WIN's paramount goal of reducing hard copy reports and paper-product dependence in accordance with the Paperless Ship Initiative.

FEEDBACK REPORTING FEATURES

  • Allows user development of correspondence for official feedback on developmental or implementation problems
  • Drives development of software's appearance and unique functions
  • Improves user acceptance of final MMS WIN software
  • Maintains continuity between policy decisions and their application
  • Allows field-level testing of theoretical applications before they are fully implemented
  • Responsible for system's data-integration flexibility
  • Acts as continued follow-up after program installation

PLANNED ENHANCEMENTS

  • Processing and tracking of finances
  • Routine acceptance of approved substitute materials
  • Entirely paperless requisitioning
  • Exception lists for materials that arrive damaged
  • Status of special tools
  • Incorporation of additional Navy engineering and logistics data, such as criticality codes and weight and cube values

TECHNOLOGY APPLIED

REPORT GENERATOR

  • Choice of many menu driven reports or create custom documents
  • Reduces time required to review data
  • Information is tailored for use by other computers
  • Reduces programming needed to develop and maintain system

ELECTRONIC FILE TRANSFER

  • ASCII files may be output to tape or diskette or transferred via network or telephone and modem
  • Allows users to generate new-construction requirements from incremental tapes developed by SPCC CRASP material status readily available for new construction
  • DAMES interface eliminates hard copy between NSA and Supply Center
  • Networking allows multi-user and remote-site access
  • Eliminates need for Electronic Adding Machine or punch cards
  • Reduces manual data entry while improving data accuracy
  • Reduces data review and distribution time

PRINT ON DEMAND

  • Reduces number of hard-copy reports
  • Report data is highly accurate and more up-to-date
  • Reduced report-production and distribution efforts

MMS WIN IS MEANT FOR UNCLASSIFIED DATA.
USER-ACCESS CODES INSURE ON-SITE SECURITY.

MMS WIN, a program of the Naval Sea Systems Command, improves material management for Navy Support Activities and is intended for use by Naval Supply Centers, Supervisors of Shipbuilding and there contracting Ship Yards, Navy Supervising Activities, Ship Program Managers, Ship Logistics Managers, Supply Readiness Managers and the Naval Inventory Control Point.
